Aoki
Several Asian Americans were a part of the Black Panther Party during the late 1960’s, but Richard Aoki was the only one to have an official leadership position: Field Marshall. Aoki passed away earlier this year due to complications from dialysis, but of course his legacy will continue to live on for generations after. He kept it real and helped flip the idea that Asians were simply model minorities by playing an integral role in the Asian American movement.
The documentary, which captures Aoki’s life and legacy, premieres in Oakland next week.
