Rock the School Bells 3

rtsbflyer2

Back at UCSD, the FOBBDeep trio [1] would hold Hip-Hop workshops for various high school conferences: KP, SIORC, APSA, BSU, etc.  In those days, we would brainstormed on how fresh and how live it would be to expand beyond an hour workshop and to hold a full high school conference focused strictly on Hip-Hop.

Fast forward 5 years later, while yours truly is living in the Bay Area, when lo and behold, there I find out that there is a Hip-Hop conference geared towards middle and high school students: Rock the School Bells at Skyline College!!!

Aoki

Sunday, November 1st, 2009

Several Asian Americans were a part of the Black Panther Party during the late 1960’s, but Richard Aoki was the only one to have an official leadership position: Field Marshall.  Aoki passed away earlier this year due to complications from dialysis, but of course his legacy will continue to live on for generations after.  He kept it real and helped flip the idea that Asians were simply model minorities by playing an integral role in the Asian American movement.

The documentary, which captures Aoki’s life and legacy, premieres in Oakland next week.

Fliers for the premiere after the jump…

Jason Magabo Perez, known to me as Jay, and known to some as the guy who would c-walk all over Oceanside when not racing his yellow Integra, is also known as an emerging literary genius who would never think of c-walking on a treadmill. It’s a privilege to know him, and it’s a pleasure for me to ask the readers in the Bay to check out his reading. -Ninoy Brown

Tomorrow!

Over 400 Bay Area residents will rally January 7 to show solidarity with the family of Oscar Grant, and demand BART Police be held accountable!

The 22-year-old father was killed by a BART police officer early New Year’s Day when he was shot in the back as he lay face-down on the train platform, his hands behind him. He was cooperating; lifting his hands in surrender before being placed on the floor! The morning of January 7 he will be laid to rest. That afternoon we will rally in his name!

Speakers will share a list of demands including:
1) All officers involved be taken off duty without pay, and fully prosecuted;
2) Justice Department investigate the incident as a violation of civil rights;
3) That BART establish an independent citizens’ review board for its officers;
4) That the BART police officers be disarmed!

WHAT: Rally for Oscar Grant!
WHEN: Wednesday January 7, 2009
TIME: From 3 p.m. - 7 p.m.
WHERE: FRUITVALE BART STATION
LOCATION: 3401 East 12th Street / Oakland CA

*** Community Justice Network for Youth (CJNY) is organizing and providing assistance. For more info call Krea Gomez at (415) 321-4100 X102.

San Diego and San Francisco Parties

No promo, but uh… I hear the FOBBDeep fam got y’all crackin’ this Thursday and Friday night:

I don’t usually like to promote nightlife events here because all too often these events are hyper-elitist and involve way too many too-cools-for-school sword fights or just flat out play the same weekly mix of Lil’ Jon’s and The Neptunes’ greatest hits (don’t get it twisted–I love Lil’ Jon and The Neptunes). Moreover, I’m not into the striped-collared-shirt uniform some clubs force men to wear. I’m more of a fishnet tanktop and leather chaps kinda guy.

However, these events are kinda close to my heart if you know what I mean. Good times, people, and music keep me moving.

FOBBDeep readers get the player-pass guest list hook by e-mailing mark@fobbdeep dot com.
